Challenge Yourself

When I do the same things every day, I become bored. I feel like life is being slowly being sucked from me.

I love lettering, but sometimes I cannot stand doing the same styles over and over again. It feels like I am not growing. It feels like I am not improving. So I have to shake things up every so often.

I always like manufacturing situations where I am forced to solve things. Because after I solve difficult problems, I always feel relieved. I always feel pleased with myself. And the good thing is, I would always learn new things - whether it is something that I need to do or something that I should avoid. The excitement from facing the unknown is exhilarating. External stimuli help me think of creative ways of doing the same thing or doing the same things differently.

So even when I am using the same tools or using the same lettering techniques, I can add certain restrictions to exercise my mind. I challenge myself to:

  • Take less time or take more time on a piece
  • Start lettering from the bottom or from the center
  • Draw from a different angle, or just using one hand
  • Draw perfect shapes without guides or practice copying fonts with exact dimensions
  • Limit to one tool or color
  • Draw using my other hand
  • Draw without lifting my pen
  • Be open-minded

There are a lot of things you can do to challenge yourself. You can follow the above examples.

Here is a challenge for you:

Do not stop practicing, Do not to stop drawing every single day. Learn new things every month from different people and different fields.

Challenge yourself when things get too comfortable. Complacency is the enemy of growth. When you stop stretching yourself, and when you stop chasing goals, you become a routine. Nothing new happens. Inspiration becomes stunted. You become stuck.

On the other hand, when you choose to shake things up, you open yourself up to change. Now, change can be positive or negative, but you only grow through it.

So are you up for the challenge? There is only one thing I want to hear.

Challenge Accepted!
